Salmon breakfast charcuterie with smoked salmon, cream cheese, sliced cucumber, red onion, avocado and pita chips.

A smoked salmon charcuterie board can make breakfast or brunch extra special. Smoked salmon, no doubt, is the highlight, but the assortment of flavors and textures are a wow factor in the board.

Not only that, a salmon charcuterie can serve as a healthy, protein-packed breakfast that comes without the guilt. It's ideal for gatherings, special occasions, holidays, or even a relaxed weekend brunch with your sweetie.

Of course, you can customize the the board accompaniments to your liking. You can add other types of cheeses, breads, veggies or even sliced meats.

We've outlined the steps to help you build the best smoked salmon charcuterie board. And remember to have fun with it!

    Salmon Charcuterie Board Options

Here's a guide for choosing the ingredients for your smoked salmon charcuterie board (or you can follow our ingredients list in the recipe card below). All of these options compliment one another, and you can change them up however you like.

    • Smoked Salmon: Since smoked salmon is the star of the show, it's important to purchase a high-quality smoked salmon. We use cold-smoked salmon that is silky in texture (and typically paired with cream cheese and bagels) as opposed to hot smoked salmon that is cooked through. However, hot smoked salmon works just as well — it's whatever you prefer.
    • Bread or crackers: Even if you're making a low-carb salmon charcuterie, you can still include some sort of low-carb bread of crackers. We love including our homemade, low-carb pita chips (which take just a few minutes to prepare), but you could also use Norwegian seed crackers (a favorite and perfect here!) or Flackers seed crackers. If carbs aren't an issue, then your options expand to fresh bakery bagels, baguette bread (toasted or not) or other artisanal crackers.
    • Cheese: Most charcuterie boards include at least two different types of cheeses. We recommend including at least one (or two) soft spreadable cheese like cream cheese (a classic combination), Boursin, goat cheese or brie. Other cheeses that pair well with smoked salmon include feta, sliced gouda, parmesan or blue cheese. Slice harder or semi-firm cheeses for easy pick-up.
    • Other Proteins: Most charcuteries boards include a few types of proteins. Since this is a breakfast salmon charcuterie, we include hard boiled eggs. That said, you could also consider sliced prosciutto, ham or salami. Just be sure to slice the cold cut meats for easy pick-up.
    • Veggies and fruits: There are so many veggies and fruits to consider! Of course, the classic combinations include sliced cucumbers, avocado and red onion (which we use in our board). But, you could also consider cherry or grape tomatoes, fresh berries, radishes or bell peppers. Again, these should be cut into slices or bite-size pieces.
    • Other accents: Accents are so fun! In fact, we have a hard time narrowing them down to just a few. For this salmon charcuterie, accents could include olives, capers, pickles, Dijon mustard, lemon wedges and fresh herbs. Tasty herb combinations include fresh dill, chives, or basil. You can either chop these up or include whole sprigs. We also think it's tasty to include everything bagel seasoning, which we sprinkle on top of the salmon and cream cheese.

    Preparing the Board

Now that you've got your charcuterie board ingredients, it's time to build! It's a rather simple process, and you can arrange it any way you like. Here are some suggestion for preparing your board.

    • Board and bowls: Choose a larger wooden board, slate, or marble slab, so you have enough space to arrange all the ingredients. Find coordinating bowls for the soft cheese(s) or other ingredients that need bowls.
    • Utensils: You'll need a small cheese knife(s) for the soft cheese(s) and a few small (or regular) forks for picking up the salmon and other ingredients.
    • Start with protein: Since salmon is the centerpiece, first arrange it in the middle of the board. You can arrange it in a circle or an informal line. For other proteins, arrange them in groups in different areas of the board.
    • Cheese up next: After arranging the protein, then arrange the cheese(s) next to the proteins for easy pairing. We place a small bowl of cream cheese next to the salmon since they go together. If you have more than one cheese, you can group it near another protein or by the salmon.
    • Then fruits and veggies: The fruit and veggies are up next since there are quite a few in this board. Again, you can arrange them in groups or lines around the existing arrangements. Please note: we recommend soaking the sliced red onion in a small bowl of cold water for 10 to remove the bite (optional).
    • Breads and the rest last: Pita chips, sliced bread, crackers, lemon wedges, fresh herbs and other remaining ingredients round out the board in the final step. You can arrange them in groups in the remaining spaces or holes. The board can be messier in appearance or have clean lines. You can sprinkle the chopped herbs (like dill or chives) on top of the cream cheese, smoked salmon or other ingredients. Or, you can add whole springs for people to pick from as desired.

We hope you have fun with it! Cheers!
