Change up your shrimp or crab dipping sauce with this tasty lemon dill butter sauce!

Lemon dill butter sauce in a bowl served next to crab legs.

We know that dill pairs well with salmon and other types of fish, but it’s also delicious with crab and shrimp.

This herby butter sauce is lightly flavored with dried dill, minced garlic, lemon juice and salt and pepper. It’s a refreshing change from the standard garlic butter sauce (especially if you love dill!) and is just as easy to make.

We love serving with steamed crab since the meal comes together in less than 10 minutes!

    Ingredients

Just a few ingredients in this simple butter sauce!

Butter: If you're serving several pounds of crab, we recommend using a half cup of butter as in this recipe.

Dried dill: Dried dill flavors the sauce so well and you don’t need that much to give a nice herby flavor. If you're unsure of the dill flavor, start with ½ teaspoon and add more to taste. We use 2 teaspoons in this recipe, which is still fairly light.

Garlic: We use just a few cloves of minced garlic, but you can add more if you like.

Lemon: Lemon brightens the sauce and pairs well with dill. Again, you can use more or less to taste.

A pinch or two of salt and pepper is key in rounding out the flavor in this sauce.

    How to Make

Just a few steps to make this simple butter sauce!

Step 1: In a skillet over medium heat, sauté minced garlic with a tablespoon of the butter.

Step 2: As soon as it becomes fragrant (about 30 seconds — be careful not to brown), remove from heat and stir in the rest of the ingredients (dried dill, lemon juice, and salt and pepper). Then, pour into a serving bowl.

    • Sauteing garlic in butter in a pan
    • sauteed garlic with dill, lemon juice and salt and pepper

Step 3: In that same pan over medium heat, add the rest of the butter and heat it until it melts.

Step 4 & 5: Turn off the heat and use a spoon to skim off the white solids from the surface of the butter until it's clear.

Step 6: Pour the clarified butter into the serving bowl with the Cajun mixture. Stir and serve immediately.

    • Butte melting in a pan
    • Skimming the cream off the butter with a spoon
    • Clarified butter in a bowl
    • Finished lemon dill butter in a bowl and served with crab legs.
