Move over café latte, here comes matcha latte with almond milk! This sugar-free matcha latte with almond milk is a deliciously cozy, dairy-free, caffeinated drink for your morning or afternoon pick-me-up!

Whisked matcha tea with almond milk in a mug next to matcha powder and whisk.

Lately I've been substituting my morning or afternoon coffee with this keto-friendly, matcha latte with almond milk. Since it's made with matcha powder and almond milk, it's creamy, has an earthy, green-tea flavor, and is slightly sweet (we like to sweeten with erythritol). It's so comforting and hits the spot.

Matcha is an ideal substitute for coffee since it has less caffeine and is high in antioxidants and other beneficial compounds.

Matcha lattes are easy to make at home and take less than 5 minutes to prepare. Ingredients simply include matcha powder, water, unsweetened almond milk and sugar-free sweetener (we use erythritol).

    Here's to healthy, low-carb, sugar-free and dairy-free cozy drinks!

    What is Matcha?

Matcha is a fine, green powder made from green tea leaves which are only grown in the shade (as opposed to regular green tea leaves that are grown in the sun). Matcha is much stronger in flavor than regular green tea and comes in 3 different grades: ceremonial, premium, and culinary grade.

Ceremonial and premium grades are higher grades of matcha, which are more expensive and typically used for drinking tea made with only water.

Culinary grade matcha is a slightly lower grade that is less expensive and used for culinary purposes like ice cream, smoothies, cakes, lattes, and more. It has a bolder flavor that holds well when combined with other ingredients.

    Ingredients

Matcha latte ingredients in bowls and labeled.

Almond milk: We use almond milk as a milk alternative in this matcha latte. However, you may substitute with another type of non-dairy milk like unsweetened macadamia milk.

Water: A little hot water is needed to dissolve the tea and eliminate any clumps by whisking. After pouring a ¼ cup of hot water over the sifted matcha powder, you'll vigorously whisk or stir until no clumps exist.

Sweetener: Since matcha can be bitter, we like to sweeten the tea. We use sugar-free erythritol sweetener (Swerve Confectioners), but you can use any sugar-free sweetener you like. You might want to start with a few teaspoons of your favorite sweetener and add more to taste.

Matcha green powder: We use a culinary grade of matcha which is the cheapest type of matcha to buy. It's typically used for culinary purposes including lattes or smoothies. We use just 1 teaspoon, which is perfect for us. For a stronger flavor, you can use 1 ½ teaspoons of matcha.

    How To Make

STEP 1: With a fine sieve, sift matcha powder into a mug.

STEP 2: Pour ¼ cup hot water over sifted matcha powder. Vigorously whisk until smooth and no clumps exist.

Whisking matcha and hot water together.

STEP 3: Add sweetener to matcha and water mixture and whisk until dissolved.

STEP 4: Heat 1 cup almond milk in the microwave until hot (several minutes or more). Whisk milk into matcha tea and serve immediately.

    Expert Tips

    • Matcha clumps easily! To prevent matcha from clumping, use a fine sieve to sift matcha powder into a mug.
    • Pour ¼ cup hot water over sifted matcha to dissolve the tea and eliminate any clumps through vigorous whisking. You'll whisk until smooth and no clumps exist.
    • Since matcha can be bitter, we like to sweeten the tea. We use sugar-free erythritol sweetener, but you can use any sweetener you like. After you've whisked matcha with hot water, then you'll add sweetener and continue to whisk until dissolved.
    • Heat milk until hot. We simply heat in the microwave for several minutes or more.
    • After heating milk, pour into tea mixture and vigorously whisk again.
    • Unlike regular milk, almond milk can be difficult to froth. That said, many people use a frother or blender to create a little foam on the top of their latte. We simply whisk to create some bubbles. However, it's up to you and what you prefer!
